        World Weather Summary
Updated: May 13, 2005 9:45 a.m.
Far western Canada has been unusually warm lately. In the Yukon
Territory, for example, a 74-degree high made Thursday the fifth
consecutive day to reach 70 degrees or above in Dawson, a town not
far from the Alaska border. Average highs during this part of May are
in the middle to upper 50s.

Meanwhile, the second half of the week turned rather cold in
southeastern Canada. Friday, for example, began with freezing cold
from many areas in Ontario to the nation's Atlantic provinces. Records
fell in Montreal, Quebec, and in Quebec City, Quebec. In Montreal, the
temperature dipped to 30 degrees, thereby undercutting by three
degrees the former record for the date which had stood since 1967.
Quebec City registered a morning low of 26 degrees; it, too, was 3
degrees below the previous May 13th record low. These two cities were
likely not the only places to set record lows.

The dramatic change to cold this week in eastern Canada was
followed by heavy snow in parts of Labrador, Newfoundland. At Goose
Bay, 11 inches of snow fell from late Thursday morning to Friday
morning. Earlier in the week, it was 72 degrees on Tuesday.

Thursday night, soaking thunderstorms broke out over middle South
America from far northeastern Argentina to Uruguay and southernmost
Brazil. Rainfall was heaviest along the Argentina-Uruguay line. Here,
Concordia, Argentina, was drenched by 3.7 inches of rain within twelve
hours. This was more rain than would fall, on average, during all of
May; the monthly mean is 3.4 inches.

Fiery heat again burned some stretches of Mediterranean coast in
Libya on Thursday. Highs were 105, 104 and 101 degrees, respectively,
in Surt, Misratah and Al Khums. These readings were 25-30 degrees
above average.

Rainfall on the Fijian island of Rotuma was 7.8 inches within
about 50 hours as of early Friday afternoon, local time.

This week, New Zealand's Stewart Island was buffeted by a few
bouts of high winds. The latest lashing came Friday when sustained
winds of 50-60 mph were clocked for about twelve hours at South West
Cape.

A small part of far eastern New South Wales, Australia, was
pounded by heavy rain from Thursday morning to midday Friday, local
time. At Coffs Harbour, rainfall during this interval was about 5.2
inches. This exceeded by almost 0.3 of an inch the average rainfall
for all of May.

Local downpours hit southeastern China Thursday and Thursday
night, local time. In the province of Hunan, rainfall was 4.5 inches
within 24 hours at Yuanling.

In far southeastern Greenland, Friday was unusually mild in some
areas. At Paamiut (Frederikshab), the temperature was 62 degrees at
late morning whereas the average daily high during May is 38. Even
during the mildest days of summer when daytimes are long, the mean
daily high is only in the upper 40s here.
