Some of the eastern Caroline Islands in the western North Pacific
Ocean were doused by heavy rain Thursday and Friday. Showers and
thunderstorms induced by a tropical wave unloaded 5.5 inches of rain
within 48 hours on the island of Pohnpei (Ponape).
Heavy rain washed some southeastern parts of Brazil's state of
Bahia Thursday and Thursday night. Twenty-four hour rainfall ended
Friday morning was about 5.2 inches in the coastal city of
Canavieiras.
High winds buffeted the United Kingdom's tiny North Rona Island
off northwestern Scotland Thursday and Friday. Sustained winds
generally blew 30-55 mph from midday Thursday to early Friday
afternoon, local time. At their highest, however, sustained winds
above 60 mph were clocked.
Friday, sustained winds also blew above 60 mph for a short time
at South West Cape on New Zealand's Stewart Island.
Wednesday night to early Friday saw a soaking rain fall on
portions of far southeastern Canada. In the province of New Brunswick,
rainfall was 2.7 inches in Saint John, its largest city, and 2.2
inches at Fredericton, the provincial capital. These rainfall tallies
were 80% of the average for all of April in both cities.
