Thursday, thunderstorms dropped unusually heavy rain for April in
western Saudi Arabia. Rainfall in At Ta'if was about 3.2 inches within
six hours as of late Thursday afternoon, local time, whereas the
average rainfall for all of April is 1.5 inches. In Jeddah, 1.5 inches
of rain fell during the same six-hour period; on average, there is no
measurable rainfall here during April. The holy city of Makkah was
doused by 1.8 inches of rain.
Wednesday, parts of Suriname were soaked by heavy rain. At
Sipaliwini, rainfall was 5.1 inches.
A lengthy spell of warmer than average weather came to an end
Wednesday in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Each of the previous 32 days
had an average temperature which was higher than the climatological
mean for that day. Over the course of this 32-day stretch, the average
temperature was 7.5 degrees above "normal".
In eastern China, many locations were summerlike on Thursday with
afternoon temperatures well into the 80s and, in some areas, in the
90s. One particularly hot place was the city of Zhengzhou in the
province of Henan. Here, at least 99 degrees was reached whereas an
average late April day would have a high near 75.
