        World Weather Summary
Updated: April 27, 2005 10:07 a.m.
Wednesday morning, EDT, Tropical Storm Sonca is rapidly moving
east-northeastward over open waters of the North Pacific Ocean; it
will weaken markedly as an extra-tropical cyclone over the next 24-48
hours. Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening, EDT, the storm blew
through Japan's Volcano and Bonin islands. On Iwo Jima, one of the
Volcanoes, top wind gusts were nearly 80 mph. Chichi Jima, Bonin
Islands, meantime, was pelted by 4.3 inches of rain linked to Sonca.

Most of British Columbia, Canada, has been unseasonably warm
during recent days. On Tuesday, for example, many locations in the
south reached the 80s. Topping the list of warm spots was Lytton where
the 88-degree high was about 25 degrees above average. Pemberton and
Kamloops each reached 86 degrees. Also noteworthy was Osoyoos which
lies on the border with the state of Washington; a high of 84 degrees
was set here.

Tuesday, fiery heat burned much of southeastern Mexico. On the
Yucatan Peninsula, Merida soared to 109 degrees whereas an average
late April day would peak near 96. To the southwest and in the state
of Tabasco, the 108-degree high at Villahermosa was a full 20 degrees
above average.

In southern Greenland, recent days have been unusually mild. On
Tuesday, for example, Paamiut (Frederikshab) and Narsarsuaq set
respective highs of 54 and 57 degrees with these marks being 15-20
degrees above average.

Heavy thundershowers drenched France's Futuna Islands (Iles de
Horne) in the South Pacific Ocean the first half of this week. On the
island of Futuna, 72-hour rainfall ended early Wednesday afternoon,
local time, was 8.4 inches at Sigave (Leava); much of this (about 5.8
inches) came during the last 24 hours of this time span.
