[STORMREPORTS] Record Cold In Florida

From: Thomas Giella KN4LF (kn4lf{at}tampabay.rr.com)
Date: Mon Apr 25 2005 - 19:56:13 EDT

Record cold descended on Florida early this Monday morning 04/25/05. I had a
minimum temperature of 42.4 deg. here in suburban SW Plant City 25 miles
east of Tampa. My private weather station in East Nobleton in Sumter County
saw 31.8 deg. I also have a private weather station in Venus down in
southern Highlands County that also saw 32 deg. A Coop station called
Archbold nearby Venus also saw 32 deg. I've been keeping track of weather
here in Florida since 1965 and have never seen it so cold so late in the
season. It must be global cooling!

Central Florida was also struck by an F0-1 tornado on Saturday 04/23/05. The
mesocyclone and funnel cloud passed right over my location but oddly I had
only a few rumbles of thunder and one close bang lightning wise. The funnel
cloud touched down as a tornado between Lakeland and Mulberry a short time
later.

In 32 years of weather forecasting experience I've rarely been surprised by
weather goings on but this tornadic thunderstorm did surprise me. I saw no
severe weather parameters in my analysis prior to this storm that would have
supported a mesocyclone and tornado, even helicity values were low. Strange
days indeed.
