World Weather Summary
Updated: April 22, 2005 11:26 a.m.

A tropical depression is churning the waters of the southern Philippine Sea. Late Friday morning, EDT, the depression held top sustained winds of 35 mph about a center which was 320 miles north of Koror, Palau, and 875 miles east of Manila, Philippines; it was moving westward at 18 mph. The cyclone was forecast to make turns towards the northwest and north, to stay over open seas and to strengthen into a tropical storm during the next 2-3 days.

Scattered cloudbursts pelted the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu late Thursday to Friday night, local time. On the island of Espiritu Santo, for example, rainfall was 7.8 inches within 30 hours at the Pekoa airport near Luganville.

Thursday, unusual April warmth built over much of British Columbia, Canada, and in some adjacent parts of other provinces. In relation to climatology, one particularly warm spot was Fort Nelson in far northeastern British Columbia. Here, the high of 80 degrees was nearly 30 degrees above average.

Last month was the driest March on record in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as no measurable rain fell. This week, the atmosphere seems bent on making up for lost time and, in fact, this month is now the wettest April on record. On Thursday, for example, this capital city was doused by soaking showers that left 4.9 inches of rain; this was a record for the date. In total, about 10.5 inches of rain fell from Monday through the end of Thursday boosting the monthly tally to 11.6 inches. This surpassed the 10.4 inches in 1988 that was formerly the April record. For perspective, the average rainfall for all of April is about 3.7 inches.
