April 17, 2005 9:18 a.m.

A powerful storm over the North Atlantic bought several hours of
sustained winds of over 40 mph to Iceland on Saturday into Saturday
night. Heavy rains also accompanied these very strong winds. The gusty
winds and heavy rains have spread across Ireland on Sunday and have
started to affect western Scotland on southward to Wales and western
England.

An unusually long-lasting dry spell has taken shape across the
Midwest and mid-Atlantic. Through the first half of April, the Lake
Michigan shore from Traverse City, Mich. to Kalamazoo, Mich. have yet
to receive a drop of rainfall. Over the rest of the northern Ohio
River Valley and mid-Atlantic, surface moisture is also becoming
scarce. Though these areas had some rainfall to start the month, the
past ten days have had rainfall totals of at most a few hundredths of
an inch. This would not be so bad, but most days have been sunny with
moderate to strong winds and very low relative humidities resulting in
fast drying conditions. The dry weather looks to continue through at
least the middle of this week for the majority of the region.

A storm system over northern Italy dropped over 2 inches of rain
in a few areas on Saturday with more rain expected on Sunday. In
addition, up to 2 feet of snow had fallen across the western Alps as
cold air spilled in from the north. Montelimar, on the south coast
of France has had a storm total of 4.15 inches of rain.
