A powerful storm continued to barrage the Greenland coast as it
slowly into the north Atlantic. Winds gust to nearly 100 mph at
Ikermiuarssuk, Greenland with nearly 0 visibility due to outbreaks of
freezing rain and snow. Iceland is also starting to feel the wrath of
the storm with wind gusts to 45 mph at Keflavik and and Reykjavik.
A storm system Australia's Mason base on the coast of Antarctica
continued to produce strong winds Friday night into early Saturday
morning, local time. Sustained winds blow in excess of 80 mph with
temperatures between 0 and -10 degrees making temperatures feel some
60 degrees below zero. Blowing snow made matters worse, resulting in
whiteouts.
An unusually long-lasting dry spell has taken shape across the
Midwest and mid-Atlantic. Through the first half of April, the Lake
Michigan shore from Traverse City, Mich. to Kalamazoo, Mich. have yet
to receive a drop of rainfall. Over the rest of the northern Ohio
River Valley and mid-Atlantic, surface moisture is also becoming a
premium. Though these areas had some rainfall to start the month, the
past ten days have had rainfall totals of at most a few hundredths of
an inch. This would not be so bad, but most days have been sunny with
moderate to strong winds and very low relative humidities resulting in
fast drying conditions. The dry weather looks to continue through at
least the middle of this week for the majority of the region.
A storm system over northern Italy dropped over 2 inches of rain
in a few areas on Saturday morning with more rain expected Saturday
afternoon. Rainfall totals at Genoa just two hours into the storm was
already at 0.76 inches. In addition, up to 2 feet of snow had fallen
across the western Alps as cold air spilled in from the north.
