 The first half of April has been quite rainy in Uruguay. The
latest bout of heavy rain struck southern and western parts of the
nation Wednesday to early Friday. Rainfall tallies in the 48 hours
ended Friday morning included 3.5 inches at Paso de los Toros, 3.4
inches in Rocha and 2.0 inches at the Carrasco airport outside
Montevideo, the national capital. At Montevideo/Carrasco, this newest
dousing lifted the monthly tally to 6.7 inches whereas April's mean
rainfall is 3.9 inches. Paso de los Toros was hit by 12.0 inches of
rain during the first 14 days of April; this was more than
two-and-a-half times the average for the entire month.

 Friday, a wind storm intensified at Australia's Mawson base on the
coast of East Antarctica. Thursday and Thursday night, local time,
sustained winds blew 25-50 mph; with temperatures generally between 0
and -10 degrees, it felt as cold as -50 degrees. Friday saw sustained
winds increase to nearly 80 mph as blowing snow made for blinding
whiteouts; the temperature rose to 7 degrees.

 Friday afternoon, local time, a temperature of 100 degrees was
registered at Vredendal, western South Africa. This reading was
almost 20 degrees above average for middle April.

 In Thailand, April's average rainfall was exceeded in less than
six hours on Thursday night, local time, at Lop Buri, a town about 60
miles north of Bangkok. Downpours brought 3.1 inches of rain whereas
the average rainfall for the whole month is 2.8 inches.

 Downpours have pelted the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu
this week. On the island of Espiritu Santo, 72-hour rainfall as of
midday Friday, local time, was 10.7 inches at the Pekoa airport near
Luganville.
