Wednesday, parts of eastern Mexico withstood fiery heat. Eastern
sections of the state of San Luis Potosi were especially hot. Here,
Tamuin soared to 113 degrees and Matlapa spiked to 108.
Abnormally hot weather burned some stretches of Atlantic coast in
Morocco on Wednesday. In Agadir, for example, 100 degrees was reached
whereas the average daily high in late March is 77. Safi was more than
25 degrees above average in setting a high of 97.
For the second time this week, downpours struck Sante Fe,
northeastern Argentina, on Wednesday night. Rainfall was almost 4.7
inches within under twelve hours as of Thursday morning. Heavy
thunderstorms Monday night and early Tuesday left 2.4 inches of rain.
The tally from these two rainfalls, 7.1 inches, exceeded the mean
rainfall for all of March by 1.8 inches.
In parts of southern Australia, Thursday would have been a hot day
during the height of summer even though calendars showed it to be more
than ten days into the Southern fall. In southwestern South Australia,
for example, a high of 109 degrees was registered at Nullarbor; the
average high here in late March, for perspective, is 78. Southeastern
Western Australia was 25-30 degrees above average with midafternoon
readings of 106 and 105 degrees, respectively, at Eucla and Forrest.
In Eucla, the high heat was accompanied by lip-chapping dryness. At
one point, the combination of a 106-degree air temperature and a dew
point of -6 yielded a relative humidity of 1%.
This month has been extremely dry in Puerto Rico. In San Juan, for
example, the first 30 days of the month had no measurable rainfall. On
average, the city would collect about 2.1 inches of rain during this
span. For added perspective, the driest March on record here occurred
in 1970 when 0.72 of an inch of rain fell. As of midday, no rain has
fallen on Thursday, the last day of the month.
