Monday began with cold far more fitting of the depths of winter
than the early days of spring in parts of eastern Canada. In eastern
Quebec and right on the border with Labrador, the temperature fell to
-30 degrees at Schefferville whereas the average daily low in late
March is about 2 degrees. Also in Quebec, but in the west and
overlooking Hudson Bay, Kuujjuarapik (Poste-de-la-Baleine) registered
a low of -29 degrees that was almost 30 degrees below average.
Peawanuk, Ontario, on the southwestern shores of Hudson Bay, dipped 30
degrees below zero.
Forty-eight hour rainfall as of Monday morning was 4.3 inches at
Soure, a town on Marajo Bay in northernmost Brazil; it is about 50
miles to the north-northwest of the city of Belem.
Heavy thunderstorms unleashed 5.1 inches of rain within 24 hours
ended Monday morning at Ceres, northern Argentina. This dousing
equaled the average rainfall for all of March here.
Sunday, strong northerly winds in the wake of cold front lashed
the city of Veracruz, Mexico. For almost twelve hours, sustained
winds blew 25-45 mph while gusts were 30-60 mph.
Sunday to Monday saw a spring snow storm in parts of southern
Germany's Bavarian Alps. At Zugspitze, the nation's highest point,
liquid equivalent from the storm was about 1.7 inches as of early
Monday afternoon, local time. Snow depth was lifted by 10 inches to
106 inches.
Very hot weather grips much of India.
Temperatures in many locations of central and southern India
came close to or exceeded 100 degrees on Sunday, with a few areas of
central India approaching 105 degrees!
Heavy rains have affected parts of southern and eastern Asia.
On the island of Fukue, west of Kyushu, Japan, 2.60 inches of rain
fell over a 12-hour period Easter Sunday, while Tarempa, Indonesia
received over 2.90 inches by Monday morning!
Tropical downpours pelted some of the eastern Caroline Islands in
the western North Pacific Ocean over the weekend. Pohnpei (Ponape),
Federated States of Micronesia, has seen over 5 inches of rain in the
last 48 hours, and it is still raining.
