Tropical Cyclone Hennie has strengthened somewhat over the western
South Indian Ocean. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, the core of Hennie
is 105 miles north-northeast of the island of Mauritius. Having top
sustained winds of 65 mph, Hennie is moving towards the
south-southwest at 14 mph. Forecast to strengthen further on a
south-southwestward heading for at least another 48 hours, Hennie
poses a serious threat to Mauritius.
Withering, post-summer heat has baked southwestern Australia this
week. In the city of Perth, 101 degrees was reached Tuesday, but this
was topped Wednesday by a 107-degree maximum. Average for the date is
80 degrees. Amongst other hot spots in the area Wednesday were:
Pearce, at 109 degrees, and Spearwood, at 108.
Two-day rainfall ended Wednesday morning, local time, was 6.0
inches at Kuri Bay, northern Western Australia, Australia.
Tuesday, the international airport outside Merida, Mexico,
registered at least 108 degrees for an air temperature. This was
unusually hot for this city on the Yucatan Peninsula which has an
average daily high of 92 degrees during March.
Tuesday and Tuesday night saw locally heavy rains pelt middle
South America. In Brazil's southeastern state of Parana, 24-hour
rainfall ended Wednesday morning was 5.9 inches at Paranagua. About
850 miles to the northwest in Brazil and not far from the Bolivia
border, rainfall was 5.8 inches as of the same time at Caceres, state
of Mato Grosso. In Bolivia, 4.4 inches of rain poured down upon San
Borja.
Wednesday, sustained winds blowing 45-60 mph whipped Iceland's
island of Heimaey at Vestmannaeyjar.
In western South Africa, Vredendal registered highs of 102 and 105
degrees, respectively, on Tuesday and Wednesday whereas the average
daily high during March here is 85 degrees.
Meantime, the Jan Smuts airport near Johannesburg, South Africa,
was hit by 2.2 inches of rain within only 18 hours from Tuesday to the
wee hours of Wednesday morning, local time. This dousing accounted for
two-thirds of the mean rainfall for all of March here.
