Fearsome arctic winds racked the western side of Novaya Zemlya,
Russia, early this week. At one outpost, Malyye Karmakuly, the storm
was at its worst early Tuesday morning, when 60-mph sustained winds
together with temperatures below zero made for wind chill of 40
degrees below zero.
Tuesday, northeastern Bangladesh got a break in the weather as a
rash of torrential thundershowers came to an end. Late Saturday
through early Tuesday morning, local time, Sylhet was doused with
about 7 inches of rain.
Tropical Cyclone Hennie has strengthened somewhat over the western
South Indian Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the core of Hennie is
90 miles west-northwest of Cargados Carajos Shoals (St. Brandon),
Mauritius. With highest sustained winds of 45 mph, Hennie is moving
southwestward at 9 mph. The cyclone is forecast to strengthen
meaningfully on a southwesterly and southerly heading during the next
48 hours; ultimately, the mainland of Mauritius may feel the effects
of this storm.
At midafternoon Tuesday, the international airport outside Merida,
Mexico, had an air temperature of 106 degrees. This was unusually hot
for this city on the Yucatan Peninsula which has an average daily high
of 92 degrees during March.
Tuesday morning, sustained winds blew steadily at 55 mph at
Islotes Evangelista, a group of tiny islands off southern Chile.
Australia's Mawson base on the coast of East Antarctica withstood
a severe wind storm early this week. Sustained winds blew above 45 mph
for nearly 24 hours from Monday night to Tuesday night, local time. At
their highest, sustained winds were 74 mph, or close to hurricane
strength. The strong winds whipped around snow from the ground into
blinding white-outs.
Twenty-four hour rainfall ended Tuesday morning, local time, was
4.6 inches at Kuri Bay, northern Western Australia, Australia.
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, meantime, was whipped by 30-60
mph winds Tuesday and Tuesday night, local time. Rain, sometimes
heavy, accompanied the strong winds.
