February 28, 2005 5:59 p.m.
Powerful Tropical Cyclone Percy is drifting over the tropical
South Pacific Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EST, the eye of Percy is
400 miles east-northeast of Pago Pago, American Samoa; it is also
about 85 miles west-northwest of Suwarrow Atoll, Cook Islands.
Drifting towards the south-southeast at 5 mph, Percy owns highest
sustained winds of 120 mph. Forecast to head towards the south, Percy
will stay over largely open seas through Wednesday afternoon, EST.
Some of the coldest weather of the winter is happening now over
the heart of Europe. Monday morning, lows of 10 degrees below zero
were set in southeastern Germany at Munchen (Munich) and Augsburg.
This is nearly 40 degrees below average. In Slovakia, Poprad dipped
11 degrees below zero. Bespeaking the depth of the cold, Zugspitze,
the highest spot in Germany, reached 21 degrees below zero. Aside
from these outstanding cold spots, temperatures 15 to 25 degrees
below average were the rule at the start of the week from central
Europe west to England, France and Spain. Snow fell in spots where it
is an occasional or even rare guest, such as the Channel Island of
Guernsey, and Barcelona and Grenada, Spain.
The week started stormy in and about the Straits of Gibraltar.
The namesake territory of Gibraltar picked up 7.8 inches of rain
Sunday through late afternoon, Monday. Winds Monday gusted to 50 mph. High
winds and slashing rains also whipped the Africa shore in Morocco.
Sunday night into Monday, tropical cloudbursts pounded the island
of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. At the Pekoa airport, rainfall was 8.8
inches within less than 12 hours.
Much of Greenland has enjoyed relatively mild weather during
recent days. In the west, for example, the temperature in
Kangerlussuaq (Sondrestromfjord) spiked to 44 degrees Monday, and
during the 24 hours ended late in the afternoon it was no lower than
29 degrees. The mean daily high and mean daily low during February
here are 0 and -13 degrees, respectively, so these marks were more
than 40 degrees above average. In the south, Narsarsuaq hit 55
degrees late Sunday, and, as of late Monday, has been above 40
degrees for at least 66 hours whereas an average February day would
have a high of 24.
February was abnormally dry and warm in Singapore. A thundershower
on Sunday accounted for virtually all of the month's meager 0.3 of an
inch of rainfall. Average rainfall during February here is 6.9 inches,
so rainfall was only about 4% of average. Meantime, the month's
average temperature was almost 6 degrees above the climatological
mean.
