February 25, 2005 5:10 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Percy is strengthening rapidly over the South
Pacific Ocean nearly in the footsteps of last week`s mighty cyclone,
Olaf. Late Friday afternoon, EST, Percy is located about 365 miles
north-northwest of Apia, Samoa. Packing highest sustained winds of 105
mph, Percy is tracking towards the east at 15 mph. Percy is forecast
to hook towards the southeast and to strengthen markedly over the next
two days, possibly threatening American Samoa by Monday.

Not the best of summer days, this. Indeed, winds Friday at the
Syowa station, East Antarctica, blew steadily at 60 to 70 mph at the
height of a storm that also brought snow to this reach of the
Prince Olav Coast.

Four-day rainfall as of Friday was 10.8 inches on the South
Pacific Island of Takaroa. Takaroa is part of French Polynesia.

Friday brought another dose of intense heat to much of the
peninsula of Indochina. Thailand along with some of Laos and Cambodia
set highs of 100 to 102 degrees. In sweltering Bangkok, Thailand,
apparent temperature soared to 120 degrees.

Friday was unusually mild again in southern Alberta, Canada.
Calgary was nearly 20 degrees above average in reaching 52, and
Lethbridge was fully 20 degrees milder than average with a 55-degree
reading at mid-afternoon. Other mild locations included Cardston with
at least 59 degrees and Mild River at 56.

Unusually heavy rains hit Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Thursday to
Friday. Rainfall was a bit less than 1.5 inches whereas February's
mean rainfall is under 0.4 of an inch. The average annual rainfall
here is about 4.1 inches, so about 35% of this fell within about 30
hours.

Showers and thunderstorms left 2.7 inches of rain on Agadir,
Morocco, Thursday and Friday. This tally is likely higher than
February's average rainfall and may be twice it.
