Winchester VA

At 1:30pm this afternoon I measured 2-3" of snow (higher amounts in the
shade of the house). The snow began about 1am, and generally has been
light. In fact, at noon, the back edge measurable snow was only 10-20
miles south of the area, & it appeared a dry slot was trying to form.

About 1:30pm heavier snow began to fall. Radar loops show progressive
back building and the back edge of the snow is now some 60 miles to the
south. The snow band is moving northeast, but back edge is not advancing
yet.

Schools were closed throughout the region today, even though most roads
were just wet this am. With heavier snow now, roads are becoming snow
covered. My hometown just put "Snow Plan A" in effect, which recommends
the use of snow tires & requires the clearing of snow from sidewalks
within 24 hours of the snow's end. It also formally activates the salt
trucks. But our Public Works Dept is so good they don't usually need the
heads up.

The morning the commute was clear, and noon newscasts showed plows on
wet & lightly traveled roads in the Baltimore/ Washington area.
Untreated roads are now snow covered locally, & the accidents have
begun.

Even when the snow from the present band moves off, a shortwave in the
Ohio appears to be intensifying. Snow could continue at times until
about midnight.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 1am.

I am going out to take more video & do take new measurements. More later
today.
