Thursday brought unusually mild weather to southern Alberta,
Canada, east of the Rocky Mountains. In Calgary, at least 54 degrees
was reached whereas the average high for the date was 34. Closer to
the Montana border, temperatures topped 60 degrees. Mid-afternoon
readings were 63 degrees at both Lethbridge and Milk River while, at
the same time, Cardston and Bow Island showed 61; these marks were
25-30 degrees above average.
Rainfall was 3.9 inches within 30 hours at San Borja, Bolivia, as
of mid-afternoon Thursday. February is the second wettest month of the
year here, but these downpours still accounted for nearly 40% of the
monthly mean rainfall.
Heavy rains have pelted parts of far northwestern Argentina this
week. In Tartagal, rainfall as of Thursday morning was 6.9 inches
within 54 hours. The bulk of this tally came from consecutive bouts of
thundery downpours -- one on Tuesday night and another on Wednesday
night.
In the South Pacific Ocean, locally excessive rains have doused
French Polynesia this week. On Takaroa Atoll, rainfall was 9.4 inches
within 72 hours as of early Wednesday afternoon, local time.
Heavy snows brought many travel problems to Europe, such as
the closure of major airports in Munich, Germany; Paris, France;
and Prague, Czech Republic, to name a few. About 16 inches of snow
buried parts of the Czech Republic, undoubtedly causing travel
delays other than for the air industry. A major truck accident
occurred near Prague, as a result of snow-covered roadways. In
Austria, snow and strong winds shut down nearly 20 miles of the
country's main east-west highway. A foot of snow fell on Vienna,
greatly crippling any travel within the city. The French Riviera
even had a taste of snow.
Freezing temperatures in Italy lead to the closure of many
schools in the central-eastern region of Molise.
One of the worst winters in decades continues to bring
heavy snows and cold air to Afghanistan and Pakistan. In
Pakistan, over 300 people have died from the series of heavy
snowfalls in the past few weeks. The heavy snows have stranded
over hundreds of thousands of people in Kashmir.
Snow which had accumulated up to 3-4 inches over parts of
Wales, United Kingdom on Wednesday, resulted in the
cancellation of many schools and numerous traffic accidents.
Heavy snows also affected much of northern England since
Wednesday as a few locations received nearly a foot of snow
and the heavy snow continued to fall through early Thursday
morning.
With sub-zero cold and winds of 30 to 50 mph continuing to
blast Brevoort Island, near eastern Baffin Island, Nunavut,
Canada, wind chills are nearly 30 degrees below zero as of
Thursday morning.
The current week continues to bring the coldest weather since
early November to the ice cap of Antarctica. At Russia`s Vostok
station, respective low temperatures were -70, -69, -72 and -69
degrees as of early Thursday.
More extremely unseasonably mild weather covered parts of
Greenland again on Wednesday. Narssarssuag had their second
straight day of high temperatures in the 50s, readings of 57 and
54 degrees. Godthab reached a high on Wednesday of 54 degrees.
