February 22, 2005 5:20 p.m.

Withering heat gripped the South American mid continent again
Monday. Indeed, at Las Lomitas, Argentina, it was the hottest day
in a string of four having highs of 106 to 111 degrees. Average
temperature is about 90 degrees this time of year at Las Lomitas.
Also sweltering lately, and especially Monday, was Paraguay, nearly
all of which reached 100 to 110 degrees Monday afternoon. Tuesday,
northern Argentina got a welcome break in the heat thanks to clouds
and showers. At mid afternoon, Las Lomitas read only 76 degrees.

The week has started off wet at Papeete, Tahiti. Two-day rainfall
through Tuesday was 7.2 inches.

Light falls of snow whitened patches of England early Monday.
Snowfall was about one inch across Greater London, for instance.
Patchy, light snow cover was also over France and northern Spain.

Tuesday, a blizzard gripped the northern Taymyr Peninsula of
Siberian Russia. Cape Chelyuskin, the northernmost spot on the Asian
mainland, weathered gales and whiteouts at temperatures near zero
degrees.

Heavy thunderstorms unloaded 3.8 inches of rain upon Mar del
Plata, eastern Argentina, Monday to Monday night. On average, this
coastal city gets about 2.9 inches of rain during all of February.

Greater Merida, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula, has sweltered
recently with late spring-like and summery heat. Monday, the
international airport registered 100 degrees and Tuesday was at least
99 degrees. February's average daily high here is 88 degrees.

Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund), Greenland, basked in highly
abnormal, even freakishly, mild air on Tuesday. This eastern town on
the Greenland Sea reached at least 46 degrees. If the observed high of
61 degrees is correct, it is more than 50 degrees above average. Even
during the fully sun-light days of midsummer, the average daily high
isn't any higher than 45 degrees here.
