"Thunderstorms packing 60 mph wind gusts, soaking rain and nickel-size hail
pounded already waterlogged Southern California on Saturday, closing major
highways and threatening to set off mudslides.
A two-mile stretch of Interstate 5 through the City of Commerce, south of
downtown Los Angeles, was closed for several hours early Saturday after it
was flooded by a foot of water, the California Highway Patrol said. Crews
had to pump the highway dry.
Similar flooding was reported along the 710 Freeway in Long Beach.
The rain was also blamed for collapsing the flat roof of a Virgin Megastore
in Burbank. No one was hurt but the collapse and water caused at least
$100,000 in damage, the Fire Department said."
