Tropical Cyclone Olaf still packs a wallop as it churns the South
Pacific Ocean. Late Friday afternoon, EST, the eye of Olaf is about
315 miles south-southwest of Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Olaf owns top
sustained winds of nearly 105 mph; it is tracking towards the
south-southeast at 24 mph. From here, a path towards the south is
forecast; no land lies in the likely path.
Rarotonga felt the breath of Olaf early Friday, local time. Outer
gales of Olaf buffeted this the biggest of the Cook Islands. This was
the second cyclone strike of the week as late Tuesday saw the core of
weaker Nancy narrowly miss the island.
Cold, dust-laden gales lashed the bleak deserts of southwestern
Afghanistan and western Pakistan Wednesday through Friday. Satellite
pictures showed great clouds of dust being scoured from the Khash and
Margow deserts of Afghanistan. Winds often topped 60 mph daily at Nok
Kundi in that part of Pakistan known as Baluchistan. Dust wafted on
northwesterly winds right to the sea, where it clouded skies of Karachi.
Friday brought further downpours to the island of Reunion. At
Saint Denis, rainfall beginning Tuesday rose to 12.3 inches. Heaviest
rain fell at mid week, when 8.0 inches was observed within 24 hours.
In far northeastern Turkey along the shores of the Black Sea,
Thursday and Friday brought unusual wintertime warmth. At Hopa, highs
of 77 and 76 degrees were set, respectively, on these two days; about
90 miles to the west-southwest, Trabzon reached 75 and 72. Average
daily highs in these two cities are in the lower 50s during February.
It's been even hotter than usual during recent days in much of
Indochina. Friday, for example, saw 100-degree-heat in much of
Thailand and in parts of Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma). In
Thailand, 103 degrees was reached at Mukdahan which lies across the
Mekong River from Savannakhet, Laos. Other hot spots in Thailand
included Loei, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum and Ubon Ratchathani, each of
which spiked to 102 degrees. Average daily highs in all of the
aforementioned sites during February are in the lower 90s. Friday also
saw 102 degrees in Myanmar at Pyay.
Rainfall was 4.1 inches within 48 hours as of early Saturday
morning, local time, at Majuro, one of the Marshall Islands in the
western North Pacific Ocean. This dousing equates to more than 60% of
February's mean rainfall here which is near 6.5 inches.
