Tropical Cyclone Nancy is fading fast over the open South Pacific
Ocean; earlier, the storm slammed the island of Rarotonga. Late
Wednesday afternoon, EST, Nancy is centered 235 miles south-southwest
of Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Nancy owns highest sustained winds of
35-mph -- a mere shadow of the storm`s former might -- as it makes
towards the southwest at 17 mph. The weakening Nancy is now forecast
to head towards the southwest over open seas.
As Nancy slammed Rarotonga, it unleashed wind gusts to at least
90 mph whilst leaving rainfall of 2.6 inches.
Extreme Tropical Cyclone Olaf is looming off Samoa, most islands
of which seem to have been spared the worst of this potentially
disastrous storm. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, the eye of Olaf is
about 125 miles east-southeast of Pago Pago, Tutuila, American Samoa.
Olaf is rolling towards the southeast at 16 mph wielding highest
sustained winds of 160 mph; earlier, top sustained winds were near 170
mph. The threat of devastating winds will be highest Wednesday
afternoon and evening, local time, on Manua and the Rose Atoll, as
Olaf tracks towards the southeast. A southeastward heading is forecast
for the next two to three days.
Early Wednesday, squalls of Olaf were buffeting American Samoa.
Farther west, Apia, Samoa, picked up 4.6 inches of rain from the
outskirts of Olaf.
Tropical cloudbursts pounded northeastern Bolivia Tuesday. At San
Joaquin, 24-hour rainfall as of early Wednesday was 10.1 inches; of
this nearly seven inches fell within six hours Tuesday.
Snow this week has once again whitened northernmost Africa. In
Algeria, the city of Constantine lay under seven inches of snow early
Wednesday.
As of early Wednesday, more than two feet of fresh snow has
blanketed Plevlja, Montenegro. Much of this fell within twelve hours
early Tuesday.
Winds of 50 to 75 mph blasted Keflavik, Iceland, Wednesday. The
freezing winds accompanied blinding snow squalls.
Wednesday, fearsome winds roared over the deserts of South Asia.
These deserts, shared between Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, hosted
unusually bountiful rains lately. Nonetheless, winds Wednesday were
strong enough to scoop up great dust clouds visible by satellite;
their origin seemed to be over the Dasht-e Margow and Dasht-e Khash of
southwestern Afghanistan. Northwesterly winds clocked at 60 mph wafted
this dust over Nokkundi, Pakistan, site of recent abnormal rains.
Southeast China's Hainan Island burned with unusual wintertime
heat Wednesday. At Haikou, 97 degrees was reached whereas February's
mean daily high is 73. Danxian was a full 20 degrees above average in
peaking at 96.
Soaking rains doused southwestern Japan Monday night to Wednesday
morning, local time. On the island of Kyushu, rainfall was 4.8 inches
at Kagoshima and 3.8 inches in Miyazaki with both tallies mostly
coming during a 24-hour span. Shimizu, on the island of Shikoku, was
pelted by 3.8 inches of rain, again mostly within 24 hours. February's
mean rainfall varies from about 4.0 to 5.0 inches in these areas, so
these downpours were roughly equal to the monthly average.
