Well finally the watch was upgraded to a warning here in eastern Ontario. It
started out as ice pellets here near 1PM and quickly the ice accumulated to
about 2CM, or just under an inch. Near to 3PM it changed to wet snow and
dumped about 3CM or a little more than 2 inches before turning to freezing
rain and now just rain here at 9pm.
There have been numerous accidents, involving 3 or more vehicles and most
recently a family was trapped inside their overturned vehicle blocking 2
lanes of a major highway near Kingston, Ontario.
Finally the temperatures have risen to 2.6ºC or 36ºF and will now continue
to rise to +7ºC or 44ºF by morning. If anyone is planning to drive in
eastern Ontario this evening I strongly recommend waiting another hour or
two to let the roads clear completely.

A WINTER WEATHER WATCH AND A WINTER WEATHER WARNING HAVE BOTH BEEN ISSUED
FOR SOUTHERN AND EASTERN ONTARIO.
Snow, freezing rain and ice pellets are expected to fall throughout much of
southern and eastern Ontario today bringing a mixed bag of precipitation
with it. This winter storm is the result of a system coming up out of the
U.S. Mid-west is now centered over Lake Michigan and moving eastwards
towards Quebec.
This system is expected to dump about 5CM or 2 inches of mixed precipitation
from Welland to the Canadian National Capital, Ottawa. This will included
snow, freezing rain and ice pellets which will change over to rain later
this evening and overnight as temperatures once again rise to +7ºC or 44ºF
by morning on Tuesday.
Dangerous driving conditions will develop later this afternoon and this has
caused the cancellation of school buses throughout a large area due to the
gathering storm system
Further reports will be forthcoming as the storm develops throughout the
day.
