Dangerous Tropical Cyclone Nancy has strengthened sharply within
the last day. Late Monday afternoon, EST, the eye of Nancy is 290
miles southeast of Suwarrow Atoll, Cook Islands, and 370 miles
north-northwest of Rarotonga, also of the Cook Islands. Nancy packs
145-mph highest sustained winds as it moves towards the southeast at
18 mph. Nancy is forecast to hold its mighty strength as it
accelerates towards the south over the next two to three days.
Suwarrow Atoll was near the path of Nancy`s eye early Monday,
local time, and may have suffered winds above 100 mph.
Olaf has quickly become a powerful South Pacific cyclone. Late
Monday afternoon, EST, the core of Tropical Cyclone Olaf is 435 miles
northwest of Pago Pago, American Samoa. Olaf is moving towards the
east-southeast at 12 mph with highest sustained winds of 145 mph. Olaf
is forecast to establish a southeasterly heading over the next day or
two; the storm may threaten Western Samoa and American Samoa at mid
week.
High winds blasted southwestern Europe Sunday and Monday. These
cold winds, mostly northerly in direction, reached speeds of 65 mph
at Marseille, and 60 mph at Perpignan, both in France. Speeds to 60
mph were clocked at Cape Mele, northwestern Italy, and at Mahon on
the Balearic Island of Menorca, Spain.
Western Pakistan weathered another bout of abnormally heavy rain
Monday. The rains were focused upon the desert of northern
Baluchistan. Nokkundi had 2.8 inches of rain within 36 hours as of
Monday afternoon; the long-term climatological average rainfall is
only about 1.5 inches, let alone that February normally only sees
about one-third of an inch. Farther east, rainfall was at least 2.5
inches at Kalat, where it amounted to more than the month`s average
share.
Two-day rainfall was 6.7 inches as of Monday morning at Januaria,
Minas Gerais, Brasil.
In far northern Norway, the town of Kautokeino dropped to -27
degrees Monday morning, then set a high of just -12 Monday afternoon.
By early Monday evening, the temperature had already fallen back to
-23 degrees. In February, an average day here would have a low of 0
and a high of 13 degrees, so this weather was considerably colder than
usual.
Locally heavy rains doused Turkey's western Mediterranean shores
Monday. Within twelve hours, rainfall was 2.7 inches in the town of
Finike.
Recent days have seen a soaking rainfall in much of southeastern
China. At Guilin, for example, 3.4 inches of rain fell from Saturday
evening to early Tuesday morning, local time. This equals the average
rainfall for all of February here.
