February 13, 2005 4:20 p.m.

Snow has fallen with nary a break this week over the snowbelts of
northern Japan. At Aomori, northernmost Honshu, snowfall since Sunday
has been more than three feet, and snow depth has risen to 64 inches
as of Sunday morning.

An immobilizing snow storm that pounded the southern Caspian
borderlands this week was pretty much at an end as of Friday. Water
equivalent in snows over the lower northern Alborz Mountains of Iran
may have reached ten inches which would bespeak snowfall of six,
eight and even ten feet. At the foot of the range, Rasht had 37
inches of heavy, wet snow on the ground Saturday morning; snow depth
may have reached 50 inches here as the heaviest snows ended Thursday.

A powerful storm spread throughout the heart of Europe this
weekend. Gales at times lashed shores from the Atlantic to the North,
Baltic and even northwestern Mediterranean Seas, and high winds
penetrated the heart of the continent such as Austria and Slovakia.
Along the northern rim of the storm, snow fell in Denmark and Sweden
with snow depth Sunday reaching 9 inches at Karup, Denmark, and at
Torup in southernmost Sweden. Also Sunday, cold northerly gales west
of the storm core raked Scotland and Ireland; remote, exposed North
Rona, north of Scotland, registered 85-mph sustained winds Sunday.
Wind-whipped snow fell heavily along and north of the Alpine spine
raising the threat of snow slides.

Storm clouds gathered Sunday over South Asia, where flooding
rains and heavy mountain snows have brought misery along with their
life-giving waters. The week has seen desert flooding along the
Makran Coast of southwestern Pakistan, site of a deadly dam burst.
Torrential rains over hills of northern Pakistan have triggered
mudslides whereas heavy mountain snows have sent white death
thundering into valleys of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

High winds roared over West Greenland Sunday. Sustained winds
rose to at least 60 mph at Godthab (Nuuk). Inland, Sondrestromfjord
(Kangerlussuaq), which was no warmer than 0 Saturday, warmed abruptly
to 47 degrees early Sunday. Of this rise, 30 degrees happened within
one hour.

Tropical Cyclone Nancy is the latest South Pacific storm. Early
Sunday morning, EST, Nancy is 480 miles east of Pago Pago, American
Samoa. Nancy holds 50-mph highest winds as it drifts towards the
east-southeast at 8 mph. Nancy is forecast to strengthen somewhat
whilst swinging towards the southeast and the south over the next two
to three days.

Another tropical cyclone has formed farther west in the South
Pacific. On Sunday afternoon, this as yet unnamed storm is centered
415 miles northwest of Pago Pago and moving toward the east-southeast
at 5 mph. Sustained winds in the storm are 45 mph. I is expected to
strengthen and move southeastward over the next few days.

Torrential rains and resulting floods have killed dozens and made
hundreds homeless in northeastern Colombia and adjacent sections of
Venezuela. Several inches of rain poured down on these areas Friday
into Saturday, sending rivers over their banks and turning hillsides
and mountain slopes into mudslides.

Thursday through Sunday, rainfall in and about Jakarta, Java,
Indonesia, has been six to ten inches.
