Over eastern Argentina and southwestern Uruguay, a late-week
blast of mid-summer heat clashing with a strong cold front sparked
widespread torrential rains powered by thunderstorms. Two-day
rainfall was 6.4 inches at Dolores, Argentina, and at least 6.3
inches at Carrasco, near Montevideo, Uruguay. Rainfall was 3-5 inches
over greater Buenos Aires, Argentina, where Monday morning was chilly
and windswept -- 55 degrees with 45-mph gusts. Elsewhere in
Argentina, rains behind the strong cold front made Sunday`s an
unusually cool afternoon at Neuquen: the high was 59 degrees versus
an average high of 89.
Last week was unusually stormy over southeastern Europe with
widespread, heavy snow. In Romania, heavy snows waned late Sunday
leaving nearly two feet of new snow at Calarisi.
Unusual rains pelted mid-southern India beginning Saturday. At
Nagpur, two-day rainfall was 5.1 inches, which flies in the face of a
monthly average rainfall of 0.4 inch.
Abnormal warmth spread over northeastern Africa last weekend. In
Egypt, Cairo set highs of 84 and 82 degrees, respectively, or 15 to 17
degrees above average. On Sunday, the unusual warmth was accompanied
by blowing dust, reducing visibility to under 2 miles.
Singapore has an average January rainfall of 10 inches. So far
this month, however, Singapore has received just a bit over 3 inches,
and most of that came during the first week of month. Since the 17th,
there has been no measurable rain. While Singapore is typically a hot
place, the absence of rain has allowed temperatures to run 2-3 degrees
above the already hot average levels.
Monday was even hotter than usual in southeastern sections of
Australia's state of Western Australia. In Balgair, at least 107
degrees was reached, and the temperature soared to 103 degrees or
maybe even a little higher at Forrest. Both sites have an average
daily high near 90 degrees at the end of January.
Heavy, wet snow that began on Sunday gave way to rain on Monday
in the town of Bingol and in many other areas of eastern Turkey. In
Bingol, snowfall was at least 16 inches before the changeover. Snow
depth as of Monday morning was 31 inches. By late Monday, the storm's
output of snow and rain was equal to 2.1 inches of water.
Soaking rains flooded parts of eastern Brazil's state of Espirito
Santo late Sunday to Monday. In the state capital, Vitoria, rainfall
was 8.3 inches within 24 hours as of midafternoon Monday. The mean
rainfall here during all of January is 4.5 inches.
