Cold weather persisted through the weekend in central Europe.
Obertsdorf, Germany was even colder at daybreak Sunday than 24 hours
earlier, setting a low of 11 degrees below zero.
A fierce winter storm is lashing southeastern Europe with heavy
snow and rain. Six or more inches of snow piled up on Saturday in
Vranje and Leskovak, Serbia and Montenegro, leaving total snow cover
more than a foot deep. In Bulgaria, over 20 inches of snow covered the
ground in Dragoman. Calarisi, Romania, picked up about 2 feet of snow
in just over 24 hours through midday Sunday, local time. On the warm
side of the same storm, heavy rain spread over parts of western
Turkey, with 2.26 inches falling in Golcuk.
Abnormally warm air has spread into northeastern Africa where, in
Egypt, Cairo set a high of 84 degrees on Saturday. This is 17 degrees
above average. On Sunday, the unusual warmth was accompanied by
blowing dust, reducing visibility to under 2 miles.
Intense thunderstorms erupted on Saturday over central and
northeastern Argentina as a strong cold front swept northward. At Las
Flores, the storms dumped nearly 3.5 inches of rain in 12 hours.
Dolores had 4.21 inches in 24 hours. Wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph
accompanied the storms.
Singapore, Malaysia, has an average January rainfall of 10
inches. So far this month, however, Singapore has received just a bit
over 3 inches, and most of that came during the first week of month.
Since the 17th, there has been no measurable rain. While Singapore is
typically a hot place, the absence of rain has allowed temperatures
to run 2-3 degrees above the already hot average levels.
