A harsh winter chill lay over the heart of Europe early Saturday.
In Germany, Munchen (Munich), dipped to 4 degrees below zero, which
is colder than usual by about 20 degrees. Kempten and Obertsdorf,
both in the uplands of southwestern Bayern (Bavaria), registered 6
degrees below zero.
Saturday, snow was still falling over eastern Kamchatka, where
Petropavlovsk Kamchatskiy has picked up more than four feet of snow
since Tuesday. Snow depth topped seven feet.
High winds raged Friday and Saturday over northern Iceland.
Akureyri clocked frequent winds of 55 to 75 mph. Late Friday, gusts
topped 80 mph at Scoresbysund, eastern Greenland.
A fierce winter storm is lashing southeastern Europe with heavy
snow and rain. Six or more inches of snow piled up on Saturday in
Vranje and Leskovak, Serbia and Montenegro, leaving total snow cover
more than a foot deep. In Bulgaria, nearly 20 inches of snow covered
the ground in Dragoman and Kustendil. On the "warm side" of the same
storm, heavy rain spread over parts of western Turkey, with 2.26
inches falling in Golcuk.
The second half of the week has been quite rainy in parts of
western Madagascar. Two coastal cities, Morondava and Toliara, have
been especially wet. In Morondava, rainfall was about 6.5 inches
within 36 hours and 7.2 inches within 60 hours as of Friday evening,
local time. Toliara collected 5.9 inches of rain within 48 hours ended
Friday morning.
Friday, greater Melbourne, Victoria, southeastern Australia,
soared to 96-98 degrees whereas the average high in late January is 78
degrees. Saturday was far cooler, as clouds and rain held
temperatures in the 60s.
