January 28, 2005 5:25 p.m.

Friday, winter still clenched northwestern Africa in its frigid
grip. Snow still blanketed uplands of the Atlas in Algeria and
Morocco: 6 inches of snow cover clung to Miliana, Algeria. Low
temperatures were in the 10s over a wide area with 13 degrees being
observed at Setif, Algeria and Midelt, Morocco. Southwestern Europe
shared in the big chill early Friday with Spain registering 4 degrees
at Teruel, 14 and Madrid and 15 -- 21 degrees below average -- at
Gerona.

Friday, snow was still falling over the highlands of the
western Balkan Peninsula. At Niksic, Crno Gora (Montenegro), snowfall
since Tuesday was near three feet. Niksic is about 2000 feet above sea
level.

Now this was a wild week of weather! Saint John`s, NF, Canada,
has, within the last seven days, seen rain, sleet and snow equivalent
to 8.5 inches of water. Snowfall was 46 inches, yet the snow depth
early Friday was only 10 inches.

Eastern Kamchatka, Russia, has been left all-but snowbound in the
wake of a nor`easter this week. Three days of heavy snowfall along the
eastern side of this big northeast-Asian peninsula amounted to about 40
inches, thereby boosting snow depth to about 80 inches. The snow held
water equivalent to 4.3 inches.

Unusually heavy rains washed southeastern Greenland this week.
Angmagssalik picked up rainfall of 5.4 inches within three days ended
early Friday. Monthly rainfall, on average, is 3.7 inches in January.

The second half of the week has been quite rainy in parts of
western Madagascar. Two coastal cities, Morondava and Toliara, have
been especially wet. In Morondava, rainfall was about 6.5 inches
within 36 hours and 7.2 inches within 60 hours as of Friday evening,
local time. Toliara collected 5.9 inches of rain within 48 hours ended
Friday morning.

The spell of unusually mild winter weather in Moscow, Russia, has
come to an end. Wednesday was colder than average by 4 degrees. Each
of the previous 41 days had an average temperature which was above the
mean for that particular date. From December 16 through January 25,
the average temperature was nearly 16 degrees above the mean.

Friday, greater Melbourne, Victoria, southeastern Australia,
soared to 96-98 degrees whereas the average high in late January is 78
degrees.

Friday afternoon, the temperature hovered -45 to -38 degrees at
Dawson, Yukon Territory, Canada. The average daily high in late
January here is -3 degrees. Also in the Yukon, the temperature dipped
below -50 degrees midday Friday at Old Crow.
