Winchester VA

For the third time this week, morning lows fell into the single digits.
Temperatures early Friday fell to near zero in the mountains. Elkins WV
fell to 1 above, and Savage River Dam fell to 1 below.

In the northern Shenandoah Valley, 17 of 22 AWS-Weatherbug sites fell
into the single digits.

Coldest readings include:
Inwood (WV) Primary School 4
Mussleman MS, (Bunker Hill WV) 5
Sandy Hook ES, (Strasburg VA) 5
Five sites in the Martinsburg WV area fell to 6.

Last weekend, the mid Atlantic got a taste of winter weather. The snow
totals in most areas (except N & E of Baltimore) were generally light.

We had the heaviest snow between 11:30am and 1pm last Saturday. We had
another coating about 11pm that night. I measured 3" total with a water
content of .30"

The Weather Channel compiled the following unique factors with last
weekend's storm:
*Richmond VA- Freezing rain & sleet w/ lightning
*East Falmouth MA- 8 inches of snow in 75 minutes
*Barnstable MA- 78mph wind gust

In addition, Jesse Ferrell, founder of http://www.weathermatrix.com
posted these extremes:
Most snow- Plymouth & Salem MA 38"
PWG- 84mph at Nantucket MA
More at http://wxmatrix-membersonly/group/stormreports/message/9526

Winds picked up later night & caused some blowing snow, but a lot less
than I expected. Winds Sunday increased to 25 - 30mph. My peak wind gust
(PWG) was 35mph, similar to Weatherbug sites in the area.

Other strong PWGs in western areas include
Capon Bridge (WV) ES 42
Sandy Hook ES (Strasburg VA) 44
Winchester (VA) Regional Airport 46

In northern VA, I found 18 sites with PWGs over 40mph. Stronger gusts
include:
Leesburg Godfrey Apt. 51
Chantilly HS 46

In Washington DC, 7 of 20 sites had wind gusts over 40mph. The strongest
were
Childrens Hospital 54mph
Roosevelt HS 50mph

In the MD suburbs of Washington, 11 of 34 sites had PWGs over 40mph.
Stronger gusts include:
Neelsville MS, Germantown, 48mph
Kingsview MS, Germanstown 44mph

On Monday am, with a breeze & snow cover, temperatures fell to the
coldest yet this season. Of the 21 Weatherbug sites in the northern
Shenandoah Valley, only 2 failed to fall to the single digits. A total
of 4 sites fell to 2 above. My low was 6.6º on Monday, down from
8.9º the morning before.

>From NWS data, the coldest lows Monday were shared by 3 stations, all at
2 below zero:
Moorefield WV, Sharpsburg MD; & Luray VA

----
With the surge of colder air Thursday night, we had a dusting of snow
about 11pm. It either blew away or evaporated by daybreak Friday.
----

And yet another winter weather "event" is forecast for this weekend in the mid Atlantic. At this time, in our area, only 1-2" of snow is expected. As a result no watches are in affect.

That is a different story for areas to my south. Blacksburg (sw VA) http://kamala.cod.edu/va/latest.wwus41.KRNK.html Wakefield (se VA) http://kamala.cod.edu/va/latest.wwus41.KAKQ.html Below are some links to last weekend's storm and this week's cold.

I'll be posting updates when the snow starts accumulating this weekend.
