A blast of winter cold has swept out of northern Europe and
over the western Mediterranean Sea. While the cold was not unusual
north of the Alps, it became so as it swept through southern France,
much of Spain and western Italy. Wednesday, the Islas Baleares of
Spain bore the brunt of the blast with the island of Menorca
observing heavy bursts of snow with thunder and lightning along with
freezing winds to 45 mph. Snow also fell briefly upon La Palma de
Mallorca. Biting-cold mistral winds to 50 mph chilled southern France
near the sea as snow fell north the the Pyrenees Mountains. Snow
blanketed northwestern Spain including at least one-half foot at
Burgos. The sea did not stop the blast; indeed, it boosted moisture
which fostered heavy, numbing-cold, windswept rain along the shore in
northern Tunisia and northeastern Algeria. Inland, snowfall was about
10 inches at Miliana, Algeria, and locally one to two feet likely
blanketed highlands of the eastern Atlas. Between Tunisia and Sicily,
winds gusted 70 mph on the island of Pantelleria.

The mild weather has brought a thaw to parts of Iceland which are
typically in the dead of winter now. The high in Narssarssuaq,
Iceland, climbed to a balmy 54 degrees late Wednesday while the low
dropped to 34 degrees Thursday. This is compared to the normal high of
24 degrees and a normal low of 14 degrees. The same warm pattern is
seen in Egedesminde, Iceland, as the high hit 43 degrees on Wednesday,
well above the normal high of 7 degrees. And in the past 3 days, this
is more than a 30 degree change in the high temperature.

A strong storm moving through Balkans brought a heavy snowstorm to
parts of eastern Europe. In Kiev, Ukraine, the snow has been falling
since early Wednesday morning, local time, as winds also gusted to
well above 30 mph with the storm passing through. The snow storm
finally let up early Thursday morning. Meanwhile, Minsk, Belarus, saw
the snow starting late Wednesday, local time, and the storm was
continuing through midday Thursday with temperatures of near 10
degrees with winds making it feel below zero.

The rainfall over northern Australia continues as parts of
Australia are getting inundated with the rainfall. On lady Elliot
Island, Australia, over 4.1 inches of rain fell on Wednesday. And to
add to the rainfall, nearly 1.0 inches of rain fell through the
afternoon on Thursday.

Wednesday dawned quite chilly in parts of Cuba. At Havana, for
example, the temperature dipped to 45 degrees versus an average low
of 64. Across the far northwestern Caribbean Sea, meanwhile, the
resort city of Cancun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula was as chilly as
50 degrees.
