January 26, 2005 6:16 p.m.

A blast of winter cold has swept out of northern Europe and
over the western Mediterranean Sea. While the cold was not unusual
north of the Alps, it became so as it swept through southern France,
much of Spain and western Italy. Wednesday, the Islas Baleares of
Spain bore the brunt of the blast with the island of Menorca
observing heavy bursts of snow with thunder and lightning along with
freezing winds to 45 mph. Snow also fell briefly upon La Palma de
Mallorca. Biting-cold mistral winds to 50 mph chilled southern France
near the sea as snow fell north the the Pyrenees Mountains. Snow
blanketed northwestern Spain including at least one-half foot at
Burgos. The sea did not stop the blast; indeed, it boosted moisture
which fostered heavy, numbing-cold, windswept rain along the shore in
northern Tunisia and northeastern Algeria. Inland, snowfall was about
10 inches at Miliana, Algeria, and locally one to two feet likely
blanketed highlands of the eastern Atlas. Between Tunisia and Sicily,
winds gusted 70 mph on the island of Pantelleria.

Heavy snows began at the start of the week in the southwestern
Balkan Peninsula. Some of the heaviest snowfall came over the uplands
of northwestern Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Serbia (including Kosovo)
and Montenegro. At Lazaropole, Macedonia, snowfall was about three
feet. By early Wednesday, heavy snow had spread north to the plains
of Serbia, where Loznica had a foot of snow, and nearly ten inches
lay over Beograd (Belgrade).

Strong southerly winds warmed western Greenland Tuesday into
Wednesday. Sondrestrom, which is tucked far up a long fjord, late
Tuesday reached 50 degrees, or nearly 50 degrees above the average
daily high. Likewise, Wednesday`s early-morning low of 36 was almost
50 degrees above the average of about 10 degrees below zero. Along the
stormy coast, Godthab (Nuuk) weathered hurricane gusts early Wednesday.

Early Wednesday, heavy tropical rains wound down along the shores
of Queensland, Australia. In their wake, rainfall since Saturday was
about one foot at Mackay.

Wednesday dawned quite chilly in parts of Cuba. At Havana, for
example, the temperature dipped to 45 degrees versus an average low
of 64. Across the far northwestern Caribbean Sea, meanwhile, the
resort city of Cancun on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula was as chilly as
50 degrees.

Tuesday, a thunderstorm dropped unusually heavy rain for January
on the south-central Indian city of Hyderabad. Rainfall was a little
more than 0.8 of an inch within three hours. The mean rainfall here
for all of January is only 0.1-0.2 of an inch.
