January 24, 2005 6:01 p.m.

The blizzard that swept the northeastern USA went on to blast
Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and southeastern New Brunswick. New
snowfall was two feet at Greenwood, NS. Winds gusted 60 mph in many
areas such as Yarmouth in southwestern NS.

In much of western Canada, it seems anything but wintry as of the
start of the week. In Alberta, Lethbridge warmed to 60 degrees
Sunday and, with warm, dry chinook winds blowing through the night,
the low Monday morning was 51 degrees, or 43 degrees above average.
Calgary warmed to 54 degrees Sunday, notwithstanding the average daily
high of 23 degrees. Before daybreak Monday, the temperature touched
50 degrees briefly.

Ernest grazed southwestern Madagascar as a strong tropical
cyclone Sunday. Monday, the storm is weakening as it races towards
the southeast and away from any land over the southwestern Indian
Ocean.

A new tropical cyclone over the South Indian Ocean has been named:
it is Tim. Late Monday afternoon, EST, Tim is 680 miles northwest of
Learmonth, Australia. Drifting towards the west-southwest at 9 mph,
Tim holds highest sustained winds of 40 mph. Tim is forecast to head
towards the west and southwest over open seas for the next two to
three days.

Heavy rains have lately doused the tropical coast of Queensland.
Rainfall of 6.0 to 12.0 inches has been widespread within the last
three to four days; Sunday and Monday, rainfall was 5.8 inches at
Mackay.

Saturday through Monday, rainfall at Hinatuan, eastern Mindanao,
Philippines, was 10.2 inches.

The first 23 days of January were all milder than average by at
least 15 degrees at Moscow, the Russian capital. The average
temperature during this span was more than 20 degrees above the mean.
The lowest temperature recorded was 20 degrees whereas the mean daily
low at midmonth is 3.

In eastern Turkey, the town of Bingol was hit by a heavy snowstorm
Sunday to Monday. Within 24 hours, snowfall was 23 inches. In liquid
equivalent, the storm's output was 2.3 inches.
