January 23, 2005 2:14 p.m.

Ernest remains a strong tropical cyclone as it is exiting the
Mozambique Channel. Early Sunday afternoon, EDT, Tropical Cyclone
Ernest was centered nearly 440 miles south-southwest of Antananarivo,
Madagascar. The winds were nearly 100 mph with gusts of over 125 mph.
The storm was moving to the southwest at 17 mph and is continuing to
weaken over the next 24-48 hours. As the storm once again moves into
the South Indian Ocean, the storm will weaken beyond tropical cyclone
force.

A tropical cyclone may be forming just to the northwest of
Australia. The storm was nearly 560 miles to the north-northwest of
Learmont, Australia. The system has winds of 30 mph currently as it
is intensifying over the warm water.

Heavy rainfall over the northern parts of Australia continued
Saturday as 4.17 inches of rain fell on Georgetown, Australia, during
the day Saturday. This is almost half of their monthly total of 7.87
inches of rain for January.

Torrential rain has led to deadly flooding in Guyana, a small
country in northeastern South America. Since Wednesday, the capitol
city of Georgetown has had about 10 inches of rain. Since Christmas,
rainfall in parts of the country is reported to be over 40 inches.

January, a rather wet month by Tulear, Madagascar, standards, saw
over 9.33 inches of rain over the past 24 hours ending early Sunday
morning. The normal january rainfall is 2.87 inches of rain, but as
Tropical Cyclone Ernest moved off to the southeast, the storm slammed
the island. This is near the yearly total of 13.49 inches also.

Much of the northeastern United States was slammed by a strong
winter storm which brought winds of over 60 mph and snowfall of over
3 feet to some places. This storm also had blizzard-like conditions
along the coastline with visibilities of near zero for much of the
area.
