Ernest remains a strong tropical cyclone over the Mozambique
Channel. Saturday afternoon, EST, Tropical Cyclone Ernest is centered
200 miles southwest of Morondava, Madagascar, where it holds top
sustained winds of 115 mph; it is moving south-southeastward at 13
mph. Ernest is forecast to remain rather potent while traveling
towards the south and the southeast during the next 24-48 hours. On
this course, the storm will threaten southern Madagascar, especially
southwestern shores.

Heavy rain and snow fell in and near the Alps on Friday. Gutsch,
Switzerland and Wendelstein, Germany had enough precipitation for at
least a foot and a half of snow. In Austria, 16 inches of snow
blanketed Sonnblick.

Torrential rain has led to deadly flooding in Guyana, a small
country in northeastern South America. Since Wednesday, the capitol
city of Georgetown has had about 10 inches of rain. Since Christmas,
rainfall in parts of the country is reported to be over 40 inches.

A sizeable storm is traversing the Middle East. Soaking rain and
mountain snow spread over nearly all of Iraq Friday into Saturday.
Heavy rain also fell across northern Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Many
areas in northern Saudi Arabia had 1-2 inches of rain, likely more
than the usual rainfall for the entire month. Medina received 80
percent of their average yearly rainfall! By Saturday afternoon, local
time, the storm was spreading east across Iran, where nearly an inch
of rain had already fallen at Abadan.

A short distance to the east, another storm was pounding northern
sections of Pakistan and India. After blanketing Kabul with snow, the
storm drenched Islamabad, Pakistan with over an inch of rain.
