Winchester VA
Snow flurries began about 5:30 this am and was generally light until
late morning. Snow became moderate about 11:30am and heavy by noon.
Heavy snow fell until 1pm, tapering off to snow grains (the frozen
equivalent of drizzle) by 1:45pm.
I have heard a bit of lightning on the am radio (nothing close though).
Last night, some meteorologists forecasted upwards of 10 or 12" of snow
with this event here. I found that hard to buy, as it was it is a
western storm (which are usually moisture starved). I was watching the
radar loops overnight & figured the brunt would stay north. In fact, the
dry slot has eroded the snow shield even there.
We have 3" on the ground. Most of that fell in 90 minutes. We had
whiteout conditions for a time. In fact I could not see the interstate
from my house (about 600' away). The airport visibility fell to about
750ft about 12:40pm.
Winds have gusted to 21mph today, which has caused some blowing &
drifting snow. Winds are forecast to reach 40mph in gusts later tonight
& Sunday which will really enhance the B&D Snow.
I expect nothing more than snow showers thru early Sunday am. We might
get another inch. In fact, the chill & B&D snow behind the storm may be
more noted than the actual snowfall. (Three inch snowfalls are not
usually enough to shut people in here, but up to foot was predicted.)
