 Ernest is a strong tropical cyclone over the Mozambique Channel.
Late Friday afternoon, EST, Tropical Cyclone Ernest is centered 190
miles northwest of Morondava, Madagascar, where it holds top sustained
winds of 105 mph; it is moving southward at 13 mph. Ernest is forecast
to remain rather potent while traveling towards the south and the
southeast during the next 24-48 hours. On this course, the storm will
threaten southern Madagascar, especially southwestern shores.

 Stormy weather beset southern New Zealand Thursday to late Friday,
local time. At Puysegur Point, southern South Island, rainfall was 4.7
inches, and sustained winds blew 35-50 mph for more than 24 hours. On
nearby Stewart Island, South West Cape was whipped by steady winds
blowing 65 mph Thursday morning.

 Moscow, Russia, was again much milder than normal for January on
Friday. With a morning low of 25 degrees and an afternoon high of 34,
the average temperature for the day was 20 degrees above the mean.
Every day this month, in fact, has been warmer than average by 15 or
more degrees, and the average temperature through Friday for January
was more than 20 degrees above the mean. Friday was also the 37th day
in a row to be milder than usual here.

 On Bathurst Island, Australia, rainfall of nearly 3.79 inches on
Thursday brought more than 150 percent of their normal rainfall for
the month in one day. 3.79 inches of rain fell in 24 hours ending
Friday morning, local time. The typical rainfall for the month is 2.18
inches.
