A weak tropical cyclone, Daren, is over the open South Indian
Ocean. As of late Thursday afternoon, EST, Tropical Cyclone Daren is
410 miles northeast of Rodrigues Island, Mauritius, and 675 miles
south-southwest of Diego Garcia. Tracking towards the west at 15 mph,
Daren holds highest sustained winds near 30 mph. An open-water track
towards the west-southwest is forecast for this storm for the next
24-48 hours, after which time it may dissipate.
Another Indian Ocean cyclone, Ernest, has taken shape near land.
Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Tropical Cyclone Ernest is located over
the northern Mozambique Channel about 170 miles northwest of
Besalampy, Madagascar. Packing 75-mph top sustained winds, the storm
is headed towards southwest at 13 mph. Ernest is forecast to swing
towards the south which would put the cyclone over the middle of the
Mozambique Channel within the next one to two days.
Gales ripped across northern Britain and the North Sea to
northern Europe Thursday. Rigs at the Ekofisk oilfield showed
sustained winds of 60-65 mph and gusts to 75-80 mph. On land, gusts
were 50 to 60 mph from Scotland to Denmark and northern Germany.
Cairns, Queensland, Australia, picked up 6.3 inches of rain
Thursday.
Harsh arctic cold has clung stubbornly to the deeper valleys of
Yukon, Canada right into Thursday. Since the temperature slipped
below -50 degrees Sunday night at Dawson, it has held between 50 and 60
degrees as of Thursday afternoon. Things have been much the same at
Mayo, where, at its coldest Wednesday, -61 degrees was reached.
In Pescara, Italy, rainfall was 2.2 inches within 24 hours ended
Thursday morning, local time. This soaking accounts for about 70% of
January's mean rainfall here.
Unusually heavy rains also pelted Tunisia Wednesday to Thursday.
In Sfax, where January has an average rainfall of 0.9 of an inch,
heavy showers left 1.5 inches of rain as of early Thursday evening,
local time. Rainfall of 2.7 inches was observed at Nabeul.
Stormy weather beset southern New Zealand Thursday to early
Friday, local time. At Puysegur Point, southern South Island,
rainfall was 3.3 inches during the last twelve hours of this period
as sustained winds blew 35-50 mph. On nearby Stewart Island, South
West Cape was whipped by steady winds blowing 65 mph Thursday morning.
