On Wednesday, the NWS had predicted a 1-2" snowfall for the northern
parts of the Baltimore Washington forecast area.
In the Shenandoah Valley (western VA into eastern WV) only a few
flurries fell. In my area, that not did happen until 3pm. A few places
in the valley had a dusting.
The snow that fell to the west in the midwest also fell east of the
area. The Baltimore MD, Washington DC, and Richmond areas all had about
1 to 3" of snow.
For a time, some stations fell to or below 1/4 mile visibility.
It fell about noon in the north, and in the early afternoon near
Richmond. Many elected to dismiss schools & workplaces as the heavier
snow fell, slowing the effectiveness of road crews.
As a result, freeways became parking lots. One reporter said a normal 7
minute trip took over a hour! Here is just one example of why many
dread the Washington commute on a snow day:

In the annual tradition of awarding of the Golden Snow Shovel, history
was made. WRC tv meteorologist Bob Ryan shovelled the walk at a 9 year
girl's house in Rockville MD. She was the youngest ever (in some 2 dozen
years of the contest) to correctly guess when the first inch of snow
will fall at Washington National Airport,
After the snow fell to the east, it was actually 3º colder at
Washington National Airport then here. Usually the opposite is true.
In even a stranger occurrence, temperatures rose here into the mid 30s
before midnight last night on a _northwest_ wind. At the same time, the
Washington region was in the mid 20s with a south wind!
Snow flurries continue to fall overnight. We had a little sun today &
afternoon temps rebounded into the mid 30s. A clipper will bring snow to
southern VA tonight, & perhaps a light accumulation here.
Of course, all eyes are peeled for the "big one" for Saturday & Saturday
Night. The NWS issued a Winter Storm Watch for our area, as they
forecast at least 5" of snow is possible.
For details on the watches (and later possible warnings) see the last 3
links below.)
