December 31, 2004 5:24 p.m.
Pressure fell markedly Friday at Tosontsengel, Mongolia, where a
reading, corrected to sea level, of at least 1092 mb (32.25 inches)
was observed Wednesday. This was near, if not slightly above, the
highest observed sea level pressure, which was set at this same spot.
Key to this abnormally high pressure has been a `puddle` of bitter
cold pooled in the high basin where the town nestles in tandem with a
strong, synoptic-scale high. Temperatures through the week have been
breath taking, to say the least. Lows of 50 to 52 degrees below zero
were set every morning this week through Friday. Highs were
no better than the mid -30s. Thus, the five days were colder than
usual by about 30 degrees.
The Big Wet is well underway across the Top End of Australia.
Northern Northern Territory, the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland
and some of the Kimberley in northern Western Australia have seen
widespread rainfall of four to eight inches within the last few days.
The rains, which coincide with Southern summer, bespeak a true
tropical monsoon climate.
A tropical cyclone has taken shape over the Indian Ocean off
northwestern Australia. Late Friday afternoon, EST, this un-named
storm holds highest sustained winds near 40 mph about a center which
is 190 miles to the northwest of Broome, Western Australia; it is
moving southwestward at 6 mph. The cyclone is forecast to strengthen
on a southwestward heading which would keep it over open seas during
the next 2-3 days.
In Canada's Yukon Territory, Wednesday and Thursday were
abnormally cold at Dawson. Wednesday's high here was -41 degrees,
then the temperature dipped 49 degrees below zero Wednesday night.
Thursday saw readings hovering in the middle -40s. Colder still, Mayo
reached 54 degrees below zero early Thursday, held below -45 through
the day, then slipped to -51 early Thursday night. In late December,
Dawson has an average daily high of -6 degrees and a mean daily low of
-21, so these marks were too cold by 25-40 degrees.
In far-northern Canada, less than 800 miles from the North Pole, a
blizzard clenched the island of Ellef Ringnes Wednesday to Friday.
Steady winds registered at the outpost of Isachsen were 35 to more
than 50 mph most of this time -- and at temperatures 10 to 20 degrees
below zero. Much of the time, wind chill was 50 to 60 degrees below
zero. Elsewhere in the vast Nunavut territory, the temperature
climbed well above average on Ellesmere Island. Eureka reached 10
degrees above zero whereas the average daily high in late December is
-25 degrees. Even so, this `mild` weather didn't feel so good as
snow-laden winds blew 25-50 mph at the time.
The island of Roatan, Honduras, off the northern shore, has had
5.3 inches of rain since Wednesday morning.
2004 was a very wet year on the island of Guam in the western
North Pacific Ocean. The year ended with a rainfall tally of 139.3
inches whereas the annual average here is about 85.5 inches; the
surplus, therefore, was more than 50 inches! The high rainfall total
was due, in large part, to an active tropical cyclone season which
saw several storms, a couple of them full-fledged typhoons, pass near
or directly over the island.
