Tosontsengel, Mongolia, registered low temperatures of 50 to 52
degrees below zero Monday through Thursday. Highs were no better then
the mid -30s. These days were colder than usual by about 30 degrees.
What is more stunning is the observed pressure, which rose above 1080
mb (31.89 inches) Tuesday night and reached at least 1092 mb (32.25
inches) Wednesday. This is a corrected pressure (to sea level) that is
near the all-time high for such readings.
While much of the vastness of Siberian Russia has been no colder
than usual lately -- indeed, even abnormally mild -- Oymyakon in the
far northeast has been locked in an arctic grip. Monday night
through Thursday evening, the range in temperature was from 70 to 65
degrees below zero with three overnight lows of 70 below zero. For
perspective, though, the average low this time of year is -58 degrees,
so this should not be seen as unusual.
Southern summer brings seasonal rains to much of southern Africa.
Lusaka, Zambia, has had at least 6.2 inches of rain since Monday. The
same holds true for Madagascar, where 9.0 inches has fallen within
the same span of time on the island of Be near Andoany.
In far-northern Canada, less than 800 miles from the North Pole, a
blizzard clenched the island of Ellef Ringnes Wednesday into Thursday.
Steady winds registered at the outpost of Isachsen were 40 to more than
50 mph most of this time -- and at temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below
zero. Much of the time, wind chill was 50 to 60 degrees below zero.
Wednesday night, the British Isles were unusually mild for
December. Temperatures dipped no lower than the middle 40s in most
areas by Thursday morning, and many places set morning lows of 50-55
degrees. In northern Scotland, for example, Kinloss was a full 20
degrees above average with its 55-degree early morning low;
temperatures fell into and through the 40s during the day Thursday.
Even into the Highlands, it was a mild night -- Aviemore's low was 50
versus an average minimum in the lower 30s.
In Canada's Yukon Territory, Wednesday and Thursday were
abnormally cold at Dawson. Wednesday's high here was -41 degrees,
then the temperature dipped 49 degrees below zero Wednesday night.
Thursday saw readings hovering in the middle -40s. In late December,
Dawson has an average daily high of -6 degrees and a mean daily low of
-21, so these marks were too cold by 25-40 degrees.
Meanwhile in the far north of Canada's vast Nunavut province, the
temperature climbed well above average on Ellesmere Island. Eureka
reached 10 degrees above zero whereas the average daily high in late
December is -25 degrees. This "mild" weather didn't feel so good,
however, as snow-laden winds blew 25-50 mph at the time.
Parts of northern Honduras have been doused with heavy rain this
week. In Tela, for example, 72-hour rainfall ended late Wednesday was
5.4 inches. Puerto Lempira was drenched by 3.5 inches of rain in the
last 24 hours of that span. On Roatan, one of the Islas de la Bahia
(Bay Islands), rainfall was at least 5.2 inches from Sunday evening
to midafternoon Thursday.
This midweek saw heavy rain fall on portions of South America. In
southern Chile, Chaiten was soaked by 4.0 inches of rain from Tuesday
to midafternoon Thursday. In Bolivia, meantime, downpours came from
thunderstorms Wednesday to Thursday. Viru Viru was hit by 4.5 inches
of rain within 24 hours as of Thursday afternoon while Reyes gathered
3.6 inches within only six hours Thursday.
