The nor`easter that clipped eastern New England late Sunday into
Monday went forth to lash Canada`s Atlantic lands. The storm slammed
Prince Edward Island, burying the capital, Charlottetown, beneath 20
inches of wind-driven snow. At the height of the storm early Monday,
12 inches of snow fell as winds gusted between 50 and 60 mph. But
this was only a sampling of the storm`s violence, which saw winds of
60 to 70 mph widely observed over Nova Scotia, southeastern New
Brunswick and over the island of Newfoundland. Sydney, Nova Scotia,
was blasted by sleet and freezing rain amidst the storm`s winds of 35
to 45 mph. Saint Paul Island, off Cape Breton Island, was blasted by
winds of 75 to 85 mph Monday evening.

Another powerful storm wielding winds above hurricane strength
raged over eastern Greenland early this week. Monday, steady winds to
at least 85 mph were observed by an automated weather station at
Ikermit. The temperature was near 10 degrees. The East Greenland town
of Angmagssalik was hemmed in for more than 24 hours by a raging
blizzard powered by off-shore winds of 50 to 75 mph. Tuesday,
the wind storm stretched far to the north as winds rose to hurricane
strength at Danmarkshavn.

Early Tuesday, Tropical Cyclone Chambo is dissipating over the
open South Indian Ocean.

The start of the week has brought a whiff of spring to the eastern
Balkan Peninsula. In northern Bulgaria, Ruse warmed Monday to 70
degrees, which is 30 degrees above average. Tuesday, Akhtopol,
southeastern Bulgaria, was about as warm.

Sunday into Monday, snow fell in Africa -- over the Atlas
Mountains of Algeria, that is. At Tiaret, snow lay 9 inches deep
Monday morning. What is more, Tuesday`s low here was 15 degrees, or
about 20 degrees below average.

On the island of Borneo, rainfall was 7.6 inches within 48 hours
from early Sunday to early Tuesday, local time, at Bintulu, Sarawak,
Malaysia.

Indonesia's island of Bali was pelted by locally heavy rain
Monday and Monday night. By Tuesday morning, local time, rainfall was
4.7 inches within 24 hours at Denpasar.

Remote Gough Island in the central South Atlantic Ocean was soaked
by 4.0 inches of rain early this week, mostly within 24 hours Sunday
evening to Monday evening, local time. This volcanic island is a
British possession, but South Africa leases part of it, including the
land where the weather station is located. Gough Island is more than
1600 miles west-southwest of Cape Town, South Africa.
