Tropical Cyclone Chambo is weakening over the South Indian Ocean.
Late Monday afternoon, EST, Chambo holds highest sustained winds near
90 mph about a center which is 900 miles southeast of Diego Garcia,
British Indian Ocean Territory. Chambo is forecast to head generally
towards the southwest while slowly weakening during the next 2-3 days.
Such a course would be over wide open seas.
In northern Iran, 4.4 inches of rain washed Rasht Saturday to
Sunday. This soaking accounted for about 85% of December's mean
rainfall here.
Monday dawned bitterly cold with widespread much below zero
temperatures in Canada from Alberta to Quebec and Labrador. One
especially cold spot was Lac Benoit in central Quebec where a low of
-53 degrees was registered.
A cold front that pushed through the United States early last week
and brought the heavy snow to the Midwest has now become stalled over
Central America. The unstable conditions along this front have
produced impressive rain amounts. By Monday morning, local time, La
Ceiba, Honduras, had received nearly a half a foot of rain.
Perth, Australia, had its third day of high temperatures near 100
degrees. On Christmas Day, the mercury soared to 103 with temperatures
Sunday reaching 99. Monday continued the hot weather with a high of
100. Average daily highs in late December are in the lower 80s.
