"ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A winter chill spread across the state early
Monday after strong winds knocked out power in about 100,000 households as
a weather system moved across Florida.
Wind gusts reached between 55 and 60 mph in Tampa Bay, while gusts of 40 to
50 mph hit Florida's east coast from Melbourne to West Palm Beach as a low
pressure system made its way across the peninsula Sunday morning. Gusts of
up to 45 mph were reported in Lee County, which includes Fort Myers. In
all, more than 100,000 Florida Power & Light customers throughout Florida
were without power at one time Sunday, officials said.
On Sunday, high winds moved through Tampa Bay about 4 a.m., closing at
least one bridge, knocking down trees and causing more than 73,000
residents to lose power. In Pasco County, the coastline experienced a
6-foot storm surge during low tide, said Michele Baker, Pasco's emergency
management director."
