Tropical Cyclone Chambo is maintaining strength as it moves
southwestward over the open South Indian Ocean. Sunday afternoon, EDT,
Chambo, with sustained winds of 105 mph, was centered 795 miles
southeast of Diego Garcia. The storm was moving toward the southwest
at 5 mph. Little change in strength is expected for the next couple of

Four-day rainfall at Takaroa, French Polynesia, ending Sunday
morning, local time, was about 17 inches.
A large storm took shape over the western Mediterranean on
Saturday and began flinging moisture across Italy and northward into
the heart of Europe. Intercepting this moisture, parts of the Alps
received some snow. By Sunday morning, local time, nearly 2 feet of
snow had piled up at Locarno, Switzerland while 4 inches covered the
ground in Sion. In Austria, Sonnblick had collected 8 inches by
Sunday evening while Villacheralpe had over a foot.
The same cold air that brought a White Christmas to parts of the
U.K. and Ireland dove southward into Spain during the weekend,
triggering heavy falls of rain and snow. San Sebastian, Spain was
drenched by an inch and a half of rain before a change to snow,
leaving an inch on the ground. Over an inch and a half of mixed rain,
hail and snow fell at Oviedo. Several inches of snow piled up at
Burgos.
Sunday morning was even colder in some parts of northern Mexico
than Saturday morning was. The coldest spot, Temosachic, in the
mountains northwest of Chihuahua, set a low of 16 degrees. Meanwhile,
the mercury dipped to 23 degrees at Durango, Hidalgo del Parral and
Nueva Casas Grandes.
A storm moving across Iran on Saturday dropped quite a bit of
snow on parts of the country. A foot of snow piled up at Shahre-Kord
while several other places recorded half that much. Rasht was drenched
by over 3.5 inches of rain. On Sunday, the storm was taking aim on
Afghanistan.
Bitter cold gripped parts of Canada's Manitoba and northwestern
Ontario Provinces Saturday night. Among the coldest spots, with a low
of 50 below, was Lansdowne House, Ontario. Many places nearby
registered lows between 40 and 48 below.
Perth, Australia sweltered in 103-degree heat for a time on
Christmas Day before a strong thunderstorm knocked the temperature
back down into the 70s. Sunday was just about as hot with a high of 99
degrees, but instead of a cooling thunderstorm, there were hot, dry
winds which gusted to over 40 mph while the relative humidity dropped
to between 10 and 15 percent. The average high in Perth for these
days is 82 degrees.
