One or less quakes above 8.0 occur each year worldwide. This quake ranks
4th in recorded history (1900's-2000's).

"The biggest quake since 1900 hit near Valdivia, Chile in 1960, and
measured 9.5 on the Richter scale. It killed more than 2,000 and left
millions homeless. The tidal wave was reported to be 35ft high, and crashed
into Hawaii, the Philippines, and Japan.

The second largest was centred on Prince William Sound in Alaska in 1964,
and measured 9.2. There were 125 deaths, 110 of which were caused by the
resulting tsunami.

The third biggest, measuring 9.1, hit Alaska in 1957, and the fourth was
recorded at 9.0 in Kamchatka in 1952. Tsunamis from both damaged property
but did not result in significant loss of life."
