December 25, 2004 3:49 p.m.

Christmas Eve and again Christmas morning, northern and
northeastern Mexico shivered thanks to a visit from El Norte, the
cold norther out of the United States. At Saltillo, high over the
northern Sierra Madre Oriental, temperatures Friday hovered in the
mid 20s amidst a shroud of icy fog. The 24-hour high of 27 degrees
was about 40 degrees below average. Skiffs of snow were observed at
Monterrey and Chihuahua, not to mention the nation`s share of the
Lower Rio Grande Valley, where in shared with southern Texas in a
rare snowfall.

Cold, moisture-laden winds off the North Atlantic Ocean brought
enough snow for a white Christmas to some of Ireland and northern
United Kingdom. Snow whitened the ground at Dublin, Shannon and Cork,
Ireland, and at Belfast, Northern Ireland. Snow at Kirkwall, Orkney,
off the northern end of Scotland, lay 5 inches deep.

Tropical Cyclone Chambo is strengthening as it moves southwestward
over the open South Indian Ocean. Saturday afternoon, EDT, Chambo,
with sustained winds of 105 mph, was centered 740 miles southeast of
Diego Garcia. The storm was moving toward the southwest at 11 mph.
This will be a strong cyclone for at least the next two days, albeit
far from any land as it makes its way towards the southwest.

It has been a roller coaster ride with respect to temperature over
the western Great Plains of Canada. Christmas Eve, temperatures soared
to between 40 and 50 degrees throughout much of Alberta, northeastern
British Columbia and even southwestern Saskatchewan. Take Calgary,
where the high of 50 degrees was 23 degrees above average. Likewise,
the day was warmer than usual by about 20 degrees at Edmonton. Fort
Saint John, BC, reached 43 degrees, or almost 30 degrees above
average. Early Christmas morning, however, the reality of winter came
home to roost, as the temperature fell from 30 degrees to 10 within
only four hours.

Thick fog cutting visibility to nil in some instances spread early
Christmas Day over the plains of northern India to northeastern
Pakistan. Delhi and New Delhi, India, were socked for a third-straight
morning.

An arctic outbreak swept over Iceland Christmas Eve and lingered
into Christmas Day. Fearsome gales swept over much of the island
nation with snows off the Greenland Sea churning into blizzards over
the north and east. Steady winds above 55 mph raked Hofn late
Saturday morning. Meantime, southerly gales also raged over
southwestern Greenland early Christmas Day. Temperatures soared to
about freezing, cutting off an early cold blast.

Temperatures throughout Mongolia early Christmas Day ranged from
about zero to as much as 40 degrees below zero.

At Bambui, Brazil, four strait days of rain came to an end early
on Saturday. The total rainfall was roughly 9 inches.

Three-day rainfall at Takaroa, French Polynesia, ending Saturday
morning, local time, was 16.76 inches.
