An extremely cold air mass penetrated southward all the way into
northern Mexico on Thursday and Friday. Just across the
Rio Grande River from Brownsville, Texas, Matomoros had temperatures
stuck in the middle 40s on Thursday afternoon. This paled in
comparison to Friday's cold. Temperatures hovered in the low and
middle 30s Friday afternoon with winds gusting over 30 mph and
drizzle. Weather observations in the area were sparse, but some
places nearby had temperatures at or below freezing and wintry
precipitation. Normal high temperatures in the area are close to 70
degrees.
Tropical storm 6S continues to spin over the Indian Ocean early
Friday morning, EST. The storm was near 10.7 South and 84.6 East, or
nearly 860 miles east-southeast of Diego Garcia. The storm was packing
winds of 50 mph with gusts to over 60 mph. The storm is expected to
continue its southwestward movement over the next few days as it
continues to move over the open water.
The cold weather continued over much of Canada Friday morning.
Temperatures again dropped in parts of Canada well below normal. In
Baker Lake, Nunavut, Canada, the temperature was nearly -43 degrees,
well below the normal low of -17 degrees for this time of year. Also,
in Coral Harbour, the temperature dropped to -42 Friday morning, also
below the normal low -20 degrees.
Meanwhile, Calgary, Canada, saw temperatures climb from their
chilly low on Thursday morning to an almost balmy low on Friday
morning. The low Friday morning was 30 degrees, well above the -6
degree low from the previous day. And looking back over the past few
days, the rollercoaster ride continues as Wednesday saw a high of 24
degrees. Already Friday, the high temperature was 45 degrees as of
early Friday morning, EST. The normal high is 29 degrees and the
normal low was 7 degrees.
Fog in New Delhi, India was quite dense through the day Thursday
and early Friday. Fog overnight Thursday brought visibilities to near
zero. The fog continued through the morning and into the early
afternoon before finally breaking. This also helped to keep the high
temperature nearly 10 degrees below their normal high of 73 degrees.
Windy weather was sweeping through much of Norway and Sweden on
Friday. Winds were as high as 45 mph along the coastline as snow was
falling. Visibilities in some areas dropped to as low as 1/4 of a
mile with the wind-swept snow falling.
Rainfall in San Joaquin, Bolivia, brought nearly 3.7 inches of
rain in the past 24 hours ending early Friday morning, EST. The
normal rainfall for the month is 8.4 inches, and most of the 3.7
inches of rain fell in less than 6 hours late Thursday.
