Tropical Storm Noru is re-curving and, therefore, has begun to
move away from the Northern Mariana Islands. Late Monday afternoon,
EST, Noru holds highest sustained winds near 65 mph about a center
which is 515 miles north-northeast of Saipan. The storm is moving
towards the northeast at 17 mph. Noru is forecast to slowly weaken on
a northeastward heading over open waters of the western North Pacific
Ocean during the next 2-3 days.
The week began rather cold in the United Kingdom. Sunday morning,
for example, Aviemore, Scotland, dipped to 14 degrees whereas the
average daily low in December is 33. Early Monday, freezes were
widespread, and lows in the 20s were even registered in most of
southern England. At London's Heathrow airport, the 27-degree minimum
was the lowest of the season and a full 10 degrees below average.
Sunday to Sunday night, a cold front instigated soaking downpours
in many parts of Paraguay. Among observation sites, Pilar and
Concepcion were wettest with rainfalls of 3.9 and 3.4 inches,
respectively.
A storm system moving over the island of Sardinia in the
Mediterranean Sea Monday morning, EST, brought an increase in
wind and rain to most of Italy. A general 0.50 to 1.00 inch of
rain fell across the central and southern part of the nation
with Pescara receiving 1.62 inches of rain. Gusty north to
northeasterly winds pulled colder air into northern and central
Italy as the storm passed by to the south. Monte Terminillo, in
the central part of the nation, had northeast winds past 30 mph
as temperatures dropped from the lower 30s to lower 20s.
Meanwhile, Monte Cimone in the north had north-northeast winds
near 50 mph with temperatures falling through the teens.
A small, but potent, storm system brought heavy rain and
embedded thunderstorms to parts of southern Turkey as well as
the island of Cyprus Sunday through Monday morning, EST. Much
of Cyprus received over one inch of rain with isolated amounts
over two inches. Some specific rainfall amounts include:
Larnaka 1.54 inches; Pafos 1.55 inches and Akrotiri with 2.28
inches. The heaviest rain fell along the southern coast of
Turkey. Specifically, Finike, Turkey has received 13.94 inches
of rain, so far, over the past two days. This storm system will
weaken as it moves eastward, only bringing a few showers to
Lebanon and western Syria.
The core of the cold weather shifted into eastern Canada
Monday morning, EST. Specifically, Quebec received the brunt
of the cold with La Grande dipping to -46 degrees and Matagami
dropping to a frigid -44 degrees.
