November 30, 2004 5:36 p.m.

Big and strong Typhoon Nanmadol is heading away from Yap bound for
the open Philippine Sea. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the core of
Nanmadol is about 335 miles west-northwest of Yap, Federated States of
Micronesia, and 255 miles north of Koror, Palau. Nanmadol is scooting
towards the west-northwest at 23 mph packing highest sustained winds
of 105 mph. Nanmadol is forecast to quickly cross the southern
Philippine Sea bound to the west-northwest. Beginning Thursday, it
will threaten eastern and northern Philippines with its high winds and
torrential rains.

The airport at Yap, Micronesia, observed rainfall of 7.4 inches
and wind gusts above 60 mph.

An unnamed tropical cyclone has weakened somewhat over the open
western Indian Ocean. Late Tuesday afternoon, EST, the cyclone is
located about 650 miles southeast of Cape Gwardafuy, Somalia. Its
highest sustained winds down to 65 mph, the storm is heading towards
the west-northwest at 10 mph. The cyclone will be over open seas
tracking mostly to the west-northwest for the next 24-36 hours;
thereafter, it will probably threaten northeastern Somalia.

Winds early Tuesday gusted 65 to 75 mph at Godthab (Nuuk),
Greenland.

Tuesday was the second-straight day of minus-60-degree cold in
Tompo, Russia. Respective lows of 60 and 62 degrees below zero were
separated by a high of 57 below zero. Tompo is well within the
Siberian "pole of cold" which takes in much of the vast Sakha
Republic, also called Yakutiya. Tompo is nestled within a deep valley
along its namesake river within the southern Verkhoyansk Range. The
average daily low is about 40 degrees below zero, so even on the
average day, late November is inhospitably cold in these parts.

Early this week heavy rains inundated a swath through the middle of
Luzon, the main northern island of the Philippines. One observation
from Infanta, taken Monday, showed 13.5 inches within six hours
alone. Broadly, rainfall of 3 to 6 inches was widespread with
amounts about 10 inches along the eastern side of the rather rugged
island. In and about Manila, rainfall was 3 to 5 inches, which is
nearly the full monthly share for November. The rains were triggered
by a strong tropical low, or depression.

Key Lake, Saskatchewan, set an overnight low of 47 degrees below
zero early Tuesday. The average low in latest November is about
zero.

A strong cold front brought big changes to the weather over
northeastern Mexico early this week. Take the city of Monterrey where
a high of 95 degrees was registered in advance of the cold front on
Monday. Temperatures began tumbling here Monday night after the
passage of the front and Tuesday afternoon saw readings in the middle
50s, or some 40 degrees lower than 24 hours earlier. An average day at
the end of November would have a high of 68 degrees in Monterrey.

A storm brought moderate to heavy rain to many parts of Italy and
the Balkan Peninsula early this week. In northern Italy, for example,
rainfall was 4.0 inches at Milano. The Greek island of Samos,
meantime, was hit by 3.1 inches of rain.
