November 29, 2004 5:42 p.m.

Fast-growing Typhoon Nanmadol is churning the western North
Pacific Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EST, the core of Nanmadol is 420
miles south-southwest of Guam, or 270 miles east-southeast of Yap,
Federated States of Micronesia. Near the storm are a few tiny islands
of the Carolines, also part of Micronesia. Nanmadol is making for the
west-northwest at 17 mph with highest sustained winds near 85 mph.
The likely path of Nanmadol is towards the west-northwest; thus, the
area of Yap will be threatened by this typhoon beginning late Tuesday,
local time.

A tropical cyclone is over the western Indian Ocean near the
Equator. Late Monday afternoon, EST, this unnamed cyclone is located a
little less than 1000 miles east-southeast of Cape Gwardafuy, Somalia.
Owning highest sustained winds of 75 mph, the storm is heading towards
the north-northwest at 10 mph. This strong cyclone will be over open
seas tracking mostly to the northwest for at least the next two days.
Having been born within only about two degrees, or about 130 miles, of
the Equator, this tropical storm is unusual. Tropical cyclones are
rather rarely found less than about four degrees either side of the
Equator.

Tropical Cyclone Bento is, as of Monday, dissipating over the
open South Indian Ocean.

Monday, flooding rains pounded some of eastern Philippines. On
the island of Luzon, the eastern town of Infanta picked up 13.5
inches of rain within only six hours Friday.

Monday, a temperature of 60 degrees below zero was observed in
the Sakha republic of Siberian Russia. The site is Tompo, well within
the "pole of cold" and nestled within a deep valley near the southern
end of the Verkhoyansk Range. The average daily low is about 40
degrees below zero, so even on the average day, late November is
inhospitably cold in these parts.

Last week ended with two days of choking dust storm at Kushka in
the far southeast of Turkmenistan. Strong southerly winds out of
western Afghanistan promoted anomalous 80-degree warmth both Saturday
and Sunday. The average high in latest November is a bit shy of 60
degrees. Sunday afternoon, a sharp cold front shaved 35 degrees
from the temperature within a few hours, and there followed a cold
rain that cleansed at least some of the dust from the air.

Monday was even colder than usual over portions of northwestern
Canada. On southern Victoria Island, Nunavut, for example, Cambridge
Bay dipped 47 degrees below zero whereas the average low near the end
of November is -22. In the Northwest Territories, Fort Reliance was as
cold as minus-46 degrees while Lower Carp Lake saw the temperature
fall to minus-41 at midday.

Recent days have been abnormally cold over parts of eastern
Turkey. The highland town of Erzurum, for instance, set respective
lows of -8 and -5 degrees Sunday and Monday; highs were 17 and 14
degrees. These marks were 19 to 26 degrees below average.
